What is a difference between self-defense and behavioral strategies?
Today, many people practise various self-defense systems, the training focused for the use of combat techniques in situation of attack. On the other hand just a very few people went through the deeper education in the area of conflict psychology, prevention and strategies for conflict resolution. In the first place, one should realize that a psychological threat and the physical attack are not yet the same.
In fact, the way of communication and behavior makes 80 % to 95 % determining factor which is responsible for the direction of the next course of the events: What can be either further „escalation & graduation“ into the attack or „de-escalation & pacification“ of the problem situation.
From the side of the defender, the prevention of conflict should be at the first place. If we have noticed that we are just on the doorstep of the situation with potential of physical attack, in most of these cases there are still present options to avert it.
Psychological defense is a complex of know-how:
In the beginning, one should realize that the person who creates a threat is
also a human.
The defender behavioral solution is based on more pillars, but the key tool is an analysis. For example, can you read his motivation? Can you read the intention? Can you estimate the social background from which is the attacker coming from? Can you read his psychological strategy? (of course he also has a strategy, but sometimes this is only manifested in attackers subconscious behavior).
Furthermore, we can say, that the endangering situation has some stages of its development. A person in defense can count with these stages. Behavioral action within each stage would be usually different. And we can continue…
In the end, one should realize, that the defender is also a human. The more you can read, the more open the door for solutions. The more factors you know, the higher is your chance to prevent, to avoid, or to de-escalate the conflict.
